Rise and Fall of the Sequels

2

There are a lot of 2’s coming out; Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Condemned 2: Bloodshot, Ninja Gaiden 2 (click links for this weeks new video updates). Will they be good? I suppose if you liked the first game the second will be great right? Hell no, look at God Of War 2 (yeah I know it got good reviews, trust me, it was bad). I hate sequels and I just started hating them right now because I realized the probability of a sequel offering something as exciting as the first game is very very low. How do you top the ground breaking shock the first title offered? The only way I see it being possible is if the time between the release of the first and second game is five or more years. Then technology allows for a complete re-imagining of that gaming universe under the new “rules” and standards of that generation. Of course, I will still play all the new sequels coming out but it will be with the right expectations.

I could go on for pages about this but to be honest it would get boring and my Smash Bros Brawl partner left me so my Captain Crunch is a little bitter this morning.

  1. I think sequels can be quite good as long as the series isn’t focused on storyline. For example, Blizzard is a fantastic sequel pooper-outter since their sequels serve almost like expansion packs rather than an entire new game. In contrast a blunder of a game like Final Fantasy X-2 was terrible because it brought nothing greatly new to the first story. Also, you make a good point about the time b/w releases. That is also part of Blizzard’s success with sequels.

  2. in other news, your smash bros brawl partner will undoubtedly make a triumphant return in the near future
